SEO audit of my articles with Claude and Google Analytics: recovering traffic without rewriting from scratch
I ended up with several hundred articles. A huge inventory, written over years. When I decided to take SEO seriously, I realized it was better to take care of that inventory than to chase a new post every day.
The problem is that at this volume, a manual audit is impossible. So I built a pipeline where Claude reads my Analytics data and my articles, and tells me what to update, in what order, from which angles. I never rewrite from scratch. I retouch, and I win back traffic.
The problem
Most sites that publish a lot have a paradox: they write faster than they correct. Every new piece pushes the previous ones to the back of the site, the back of the index, the back of memory. Articles that worked once fade away.
But an article that worked has already done the hardest part. It is indexed. It may have inbound links. It answers an intent that people are still searching for. Letting it die is throwing away an asset.
I could not read my hundreds of articles by hand every month. Even one hour a day would not close the loop in a year. I needed assisted triage.
What I set up
A weekly audit driven by three types of signals.
Decline signals. Every week I pull articles that have lost significant traffic over the last thirty days compared to the previous period. They are the first audit candidates. A declining article is not necessarily bad: it is often overtaken by a newer competitor or by a shift in the query.
Opportunity signals. I also pull articles that gain impressions but not clicks, a sign that the title or description needs work, and articles sitting on page two for relevant queries, one step from the top ten.
Per-article diagnosis. Claude reads the whole article, compares it with pages that outrank it, identifies what is missing or poorly prioritized. It produces a short report: what works, what lags, a list of concrete retouches. It does not rewrite. It diagnoses.
Targeted updates. I take over. On most articles, the edit takes fifteen minutes: reworking a lead, adding a missing section, redoing the title, cleaning internal linking. No full rewrite, and that is the key point.
The result
The effort-to-result ratio is what surprised me the most. On the light updates of the last four months, about two out of three gained visibility within three weeks. Not all at the same level, but enough for global traffic to be well above.
I do not publish less as a result. I may even publish a bit more, because the time I no longer spend eyeballing stats goes into writing. The pipeline gives me back my focus.
And there is a lasting effect. Because I have built the habit of improving, I publish better the first time. My recent articles have a cleaner structure, better linking, sharper title craft. Regular exposure to the audit trains you to write right without thinking about it.
How you can replicate this
This works as soon as you have around thirty articles online and at least three months of Analytics history. Below that, you will not have enough signal for the audit to produce reliable decisions.
Set up a real data flow. Do not work from screenshots. Pull metrics via API, store them in a flat folder, back them up. The audit is only worth it if the data is clean and archived.
Then write a report template. What you ask Claude must be constant from one week to the next. Same structure, same criteria, same output format. Regularity is what allows week-to-week comparison.
Accept that you will not handle everything. You will always have more audit candidates than hours in your week. Prioritize what pays: articles with strong potential that require little work. Park heavy rewrites until you have harvested the low-hanging fruit.
One last tip. Protect your voice. AI tends to suggest neutral language. In audits it is worse, because it compares with other pages often written by machines. Stay in your tone. Your editorial originality is also an SEO signal, even if no one talks about it.
